In ancient Chinese paintings, mountains and rivers were always depicted on a grand scale, while the people and villages in the scenes appeared extremely small, showing that the ancients held a deep reverence for nature. Frost, rain, snow, auroras, and lightning are all forms of nature's dialogue with humanity, its language. Water exists in various forms: ice, frost, rain, snow, glaciers, rivers, oceans, lakes, and more. In Chinese culture, there is a famous saying: "Water benefits all things but does not compete," meaning that water nourishes all living beings in nature without striving to assert its uniqueness. This embodies a spirit of humility and inclusiveness. Mountains, on the other hand, possess many characteristics, such as the solitude of being high and cold, the broad-mindedness of their vastness, and the resilience of their sharp edges. Plants and trees represent the vitality of summer and the warm colors of autumn, among other things. I strive to capture these unique qualities of natural elements through my camera—the softness of water, the grandeur of mountains, the brilliance of autumn, and the harshness of winter. These are the emotions I express in my images and the dialogue I have with nature.

When I go to a shooting location, I carefully plan the trip: study the positions of the shooting spots and mountains, the areas where sunrise and sunset light will fall, and even the distance from accommodations to the shooting points. I believe everything is the best arrangement. The unexpected changes could surprise the journey, as long as the photographer can quickly make the decision. Each of our landscape photographers is striving to capture that perfect image we envision. To achieve this, I explore places I’ve never been to before, such as newly formed blue ice caves beneath glaciers. Sometimes, I revisit the same scene repeatedly, waiting for those awe-inspiring moments—whether it’s lightning, the aurora, a stunning cloud formation, or even a sudden appearance of an animal. These elements can add a completely different feel to the same scene. Recently, many experts have commented on the homogenization of photography, arguing against shooting in the same locations. I don’t entirely agree with this perspective because every interaction I have with nature is unique. When that once-in-a-lifetime moment occurs, I want to be the one who personally experiences and captures it, rather than relying on post-processing or AI to recreate it. After all, the most beautiful moments in landscape photography come from firsthand experiences—something that can’t be achieved by simply sitting behind a keyboard.

What are the main features of a successful landscape photographer in your opinion?

As a professional landscape photographer, I believe one must have a thorough understanding of natural elements like wind, frost, rain, and snow, as well as the ability to predict weather conditions using various forecasting tools. Only then can they gain a clear idea of the scenes they might capture. As the saying goes, a photographer needs to "read the language of nature." All natural phenomena—wind, frost, rain, snow, and weather changes—are essentially nature's way of communicating with humans. A landscape photographer must understand and interpret these changes to make their shooting plans relatively successful or to have a reasonably accurate prediction in advance. For example, in the winter at Banff National Park, you need to know what scenes might appear at certain shooting spots when temperatures drop below -20°C, such as ice formations, snowdrifts, frost-covered trees, and other extreme landscapes caused by the severe cold.

When capturing the aurora, we first need to predict its arrival time and intensity, check the clarity of the sky, the thickness of the clouds, and other factors to increase the chances of a successful shoot, while also considering the foreground. Another crucial point is that a landscape photographer must have sufficient physical stamina to handle activities like hiking and mountaineering. This is because we aim to capture scenes that others haven’t seen, revealing the lesser-known aspects of nature to the world.

Could you please tell us something more about your workflow from the idea to the final product?

Many years ago, I used to enjoy collecting art. I often visit top photography websites, especially 1x.com, to enjoy and learn from works of great artistic value, thereby improve my understanding of arts and inspiration. Therefore, having a vision in mind is the most important thing, followed by taking action and visiting beautiful locations during the right seasons to create. Of course, many of the scenes I capture may not seem particularly valuable at the time, but when I revisit the raw file during my leisure and scrutinize them, I often find more inspiration for post-processing. The depth of one’s experiences often matters more than advanced writing skills. You need enough imagination in your mind to craft a complete piece of writing. It is the same as photography. Having that beautiful image in your mind is more important, as it drives you to seek out where it comes from and capture it. On Instagram, I follow many photographers with diverse styles, and I frequently browse the works featured on the homepage of 1x, almost daily. Whether it’s documentary, landscape, or portrait photography, these works provide me with a lot of inspiration. Learning from others’ experiences and gaining inspiration is often easier than racking your own brain. For example, incorporating human elements into nature or blending portraits with natural landscapes can add a striking touch to the image. Therefore, photography is also a reflection of one’s personal experiences. The more you have in your mind, the more naturally it translates into the reality captured in your photos. Nature offers many different weather conditions, and even the same location can yield vastly different results when shot at different times, seasons, or temperatures. So, for places I’m very familiar with, like Banff, I revisit them in different seasons, and I often find new inspiration and perspectives to explore.

Many people think that the gear is not very important when the passion for photography is strong. We stayed at a campsite at the base of the mountain for two nights and, under a starry night, hiked for two and half hours to reach this spot. Not like many other photographers descended to the lakeside to shoot, I wanted to find the best position to center the peak in the frame and capture as much of the mountain's reflection as possible. After searching in the dark for a long time, I finally climbed onto a large rock and captured this shot of Fitz Roy Peak during the blue hour, with the mountain glowing softly. Photographers often say Patagonia has two golden sunrises—the first one is this stunning blue-hour glow on the peaks.

Who are your favourite photographers or mentors whose works have influenced you and your photography?

As mentioned earlier, when I first started using a camera in 2015, a photographer took a few photos of my children that left a lasting impression on me. Since then, I followed his online photography courses for several years. He often offered free beginner photography lessons in some groups during his spare time, which I benefited greatly. Starting last year, I also created a public photography group where I offer free series of photography courses for beginners, hoping to pass on this spirit of public service. At the end of 2019, I began purchasing post-processing courses, such as those by Weimin Chu(Thomas Chu on 1x), who won the 2019 National Geographic Global Photographer of the Year award and received accolades at the World Press Photo contest. Of course, I also follow other outstanding landscape photographers like Daniel Kordan, Marc Adamus, and our local Banff-based photographer Paul Zizka. Every year, I keep a close eye on the winners of major landscape photography competitions. The styles and locations of these photographers have had a significant positive impact on my work, inspiring my photos with fresh ideas.

Now, since we have almost reached the end of this interview, I would kindly ask you to share with us your plans or photographic projects you would like to be involved in.

Since landscape photography is my life, my plan is always to explore and shoot in places around the world that I haven’t yet visited, such as New Zealand, Japan, Greenland, Antarctica, and more. These places might have already been visited many times in my imagination, forming my own ideas of what beauty looks like, but I still want to experience and photograph them myself. The judges and members here provide valuable feedback and suggestions for improving my photos, which is fantastic. In 2020, I published less than 10 photos in a year. However, as I continued to learn and improve my shooting and post-processing skills, I managed to publish over 200 photos in 2024, including 103 awarded photos.
